Guide Intro The Four Cs Birth of Diamonds Diamond Shapes Diamond Anatomy Ring Metal
& Settings

The absolute standard when considering a diamond are the “Four Cs”. They are Carat Weight, Clarity, Color, and Cut.

Each "C" below can have a major influence on the price (and lifetime value) of the diamond. But instead of seeking only the top quality diamond, find a suitable balance within the four Cs to meet your budget. The diamond is only a symbol. What it stands for is most important.

In a classic example, you can purchase a much larger (carat weight) diamond with some minor inclusions (clarity) of slightly less color for the same price as a much smaller diamond in better clarity and color. Since most inclusions (clarity) are invisible to the naked eye and color is often more difficult to distinguish, many diamond buyers find that choosing a diamond from a bit lower point on the clarity and color scale is the best choice. This allows them to put more of their budget toward size, which is the most noticeable aspect of a diamond.

Finally, remember that a variance within each C category between the low and high ends of the scale can swing the price by hundreds, or often thousands of dollars.

Carat Weight
Carat Weight is the WEIGHT of the diamond. This is often confused with size. "Size" is really Carat Weight.

If an item has multiple diamonds, "ct. tw." will express the Carat Total Weight of all the diamonds in the piece...

Clarity
Since diamonds are made by nature, most have natural internal blemishes. In fact, only the most rare (and expensive) diamonds are free of inclusions, as they are known. These tiny imperfections were formed by minerals or other Earthly items that became one with the diamond during its birth...
Color
Color is based on the naturally occurring color range of a diamond, which is colorless to yellowish. This is not to be confused with other colors you may see offered in diamonds, as those are enhanced or created by man...
Cut
Diamond CUT refers to the quality of the job the diamond cutter did, and should not be confused with SHAPE. Diamonds come out of the ground rough before skilled craftsmen cut and polish them, which determines the geometric proportions the diamond will have.

The beauty of a diamond is largely determined...
